India A team

As we were discussing the teams for the Twenty20 Worldcup and the first test between India and England, the selectors announced the squad for the India A tour to Kenya and Zimbabwe. Here is the team -

  • Mohd. Kaif (Captain) – Middle order Batsman
  • Parthiv Patel (Vice-captain) – WK, but picked as batsman
  • Robin Uthappa – Opening batsman
  • C Pujara – Middle order batsman
  • S Badrinath – Middle order batsman
  • Rohit Sharma – Middle order batsman
  • Rajesh Pawar – Left Arm Spin
  • Mahesh Rawat  – Wicket Keeper
  • Piyush Chawla – Leg Break Bowler
  • Arjun Yadav – Middle order batsman
  • Pragyan Ojha – Left Arm Spin
  • Irfan Pathan – Left Arm Medium Pace/Left hand batsman
  • Yo Mahesh – Right Arm Medium Pace
  • Pankaj Singh – Right Arm Medium Pace
  • Niraj Patel – Middle Order batsman

So, whats wrong with this team? Plenty.

  • Opening batsmen – India currently has a lack of opening batsmen and it is time to try out genuine openers. It was pointed out by this article too (Thanks, Chandan). Apart from Uthappa, there is no one. Why wasn’t M Vijay picked? He is an opener and barring Uthappa and Tiwary has scored more runs than anyone else in the Ranjis. He is also only 23 years old. Sure Parthiv now opens the batting for Gujarat, but c’mon…Apparently, Chopra wasn’t picked because of his age (29 years!), while Rajesh Pawar (28 years) finds a place in the team. IMHO, trying out Chopra before the Aussie tour should have ranked high on the selectors agenda.
  • Fast bowlers - Yo Mahesh and Irfan Pathan are good choices, but why weren’t Munaf and Ishant picked? Or VRV Singh?? Pankaj Singh is definitely a surprise selection.
  • Left arm spinners – Do we really need two? Why not pick one offspinner instead? Yusuf Pathan has been picked up for the Twenty20 shortlist. Surely, he could have been given a try. Or R. Aswhin, the off spinner who took 31 scalps in 4 matches and was named bowler of the year in domestic cricket, could have been given a go.
  •  Arjun Yadav - Will someone please explain to me why he was picked? Apart from being Shivlal Yadav’s son and being able to threaten people with a stump, please give me one good reason.
  • Suresh Raina – Why wasn’t he picked? In an interview to Hindustan Times a day before the team was announced, Raina says he is now fully fit, but he wasn’t picked. Apparently, Manoj Tiwary is also not fully fit to be included in the team.
  • Joginder Sharma – He had a good domestic season and India is looking out for all rounders. Why wasn’t he picked? I think this is a shocking omission.
  • Sehwag - I think India needs Sehwag. It’s a pity he is not in the Seniors team and doesn’t find a place in the  A team either. They could have named him captain and Kaif vice captain. Bajji must be glad he is playing for Surrey, chalking up much needed match practice and experience, while Sehwag must be hoping to score some runs in the local Buchi Babu tournament.

Ok, now that I’ve let my steam out, I do agree that there can only be 15 people in the team and selection is not an easy task. But the team(s) that Mohan picked earlier had a good combination of people trying to get back into the team and people in the fringes of national selection. On the other hand, this team contains people like Arjun Yadav….

India’s XI for the First Test

From this rather forthright set of statements by captain Rahul Dravid, it appears as if Team India’s playing XI for the first Test against England (at Lord’s from July 19 to 23) has been virtually decided.

Rahul Dravid indicated that he was expecting big things from V. V. S. Laxman and appears to have given the stylish middle-order batsman the all-clear to play in the starting XI.

We can connect the dots between the following two statements and surmise that Laxman will play.

“I back Laxman to have a big tour this time. The last time he didn’t have as great a tour as the other guys. I can see that he’s determined to correct it this time. He looks hungry.”

“I know my best top order. I’m pretty clear about the top six going into the first Test match. In the next game (against England ‘A’) we will be playing our top six batsmen.”

Any lingering doubts may have been sealed by the sparkling 95 that Laxman scored in India’s tour opener against Sussex.

Given Dinesh Karthik’s impressive outing and given the fact that Jaffer scored a century in his last outing — albeit against Bangladesh — I don’t believe the opening combination will be tampered with. So, we can expect a top-six of: Karthik, Jaffer, Dravid, Tendulkar, Ganguly and Laxman.

The only question would be if India will play five bowlers or M. S. Dhoni and four bowlers.

Here again, Dravid puts paid to any speculation on the matter with yet another forthright comment. That the team expects to play both Karthik and Dhoni and four bowlers is sealed in the following two comments:

“We will probably go in with four bowlers. Depending upon the weather and the pitch we will have to decide whether it’s two spinners and two fast bowlers, or three pacers and a spinner.”

“Dhoni is coming here for the first time and the people here will be seeing him for the first time. Dinesh Karthik too has been very impressive in his short career. Had a lot of success in South Africa. We will be expecting both of them to deliver the goods.”

Given this scenario, we can expect that the only selection conundrum would be whether India plays two pacers and two spinners (unlikely) and if they play three pace-men, who these will be. Although most scribes are pointing to Sreesanth, Zaheer Khan and R. P. Singh as the combination, I’d like to see them play Sreesanth, Zaheer Khan and Ranadeb Bose.

So, my team for the First Test would be:

Karthik, Jaffer, Dravid, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Laxman, Dhoni, Kumble, Sreesanth, Zaheer Khan, Ranadeb Bose.

When will they learn to shut up?

I was absolutely shocked to read this piece in The Telegraph today. We often hear of players getting wrapped on the knuckles for irresponsible leaks and squeaks to the media. However, officialdom normally has a way of getting away with it. Greg Chappell did. Several BCCI officials do… regularly.

But this latest leak defies belief!

Let’s sample this peach, for example: “It’s tough to say anything definitely, but my feeling is that Sachin Tendulkar alone would have been an absolute certainty for the probables’ list… There could well have been a long debate over Rahul and Sourav” one of the five selectors told The Telegraph on Sunday.

Why is it not possible for the selectors to adopt a “What is said in the rooms stays in the rooms policy”? If they cannot adopt that fundamental principle, they should really not be on the committee! They should not be raising issues that would arouse needless speculation in the media, thereby fanning an already burning forest; the forest of cricket-mania that the media regularly indulges in.

This wise selector then goes on to suggest that “even if Sachin was among the probables, the captaincy would still go to Mahendra Singh Dhoni.”

Ok! So the rest of the selectors are going to pretend to look the other way while this one selector thumps the table?

I just don’t get it. Why are these people in office?

Possible India-A Team (Edit)

Given the recent comments on this blogsite on my original post on this topic, below is a fuller list of potential India-A players.

Openers:
Virender Sehwag, Aakash Chopra, Robin Uthappa, Shikar Dhawan

Middle-order bats:
Dinesh Mongia, Suresh Raina, Mohammed Kaif, S. Badrinath, Venugopala Rao, Rohit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli

Wicket Keepers:
Parthiv Patel, Puneet Bisht

Pace-bowlers:
Munaf Patel, Ajit Agarkar, V Yo Mahesh, Rakesh Patel, Ashish Nehra, Irfan Pathan, Joginder Sharma, V. R. V. Singh

Spinners:
Harbhajan Singh, Rajesh Pawar, Piyush Chawla, Murali Kartik, K. P. Appanna, Amit Mishra, Pragyan Ojha, Sayyed Iqbal Abdulla, Shahbaz Nadeem

Given this scenario, it is possible for us to construct an India-A and an India-B as follows (each with 16 players in them):

India-A
Virender Sehwag
Shikar Dhawan
Dinesh Mongia
Mohammed Kaif
S. Badrinath
Suresh Raina
Parthiv Patel
Piyush Chawla
Ajit Agarkar / V Yo Mahesh
V. R. V. Singh / Ashish Nehra
Murali Kartik / K. P. Appanna / Sayyed Iqbal Abdulla / Shahbaz Nadeem

India-B:
Aakash Chopra
Robin Uthappa
Cheteshwa Pujara
Venugopala Rao / Rohit Sharma
Manoj Tiwary / Virat Kohli
Puneet Bisht
Irfan Pathan
Harbhajan Singh
Rakesh Patel / Joginder Sharma
Rajesh Pawar / Pragyan Ojha / Amit Mishra
Munaf Patel

The one other player that perhaps could be added is Gagan Khoda. But that would be at the exepense of one of the lefties — perhaps Abdulla…

Composition of India-A Teams

I was recently reading this interview in The Hindustan Times by Dilip Vengsarkar, the Indian Chairman of Selectors. There was a comment by Vengsarkar on the composition of India-A sides that got me thinking.

Vengsarkar said that in his view, “the BCCI must organise [India-A tours] on a war footing“. I don’t think any Team India fan would disagree with him on that view. I am not sure if the BCCI is listening though! There is no reason why India-A should not be continually on tour to some part of the globe. An alternative would be for India-A and India-B to constantly play against each other! Why not? How else would you know if, for example, Munaf Patel has tested himself in a match situation?

Vengsarkar then says that, in his opinion, “the right age group would be the under-25s“.

I am not sure I agree with that view. I think India-A should include players who are on the fringes of national-team selection and if they happen to be under 25 years of age, then so be it.

If we take the current Team India that is in the UK as the representative team of the moment, then we can think of the following players who are on the fringes of national selection (for Tests matches).

Openers:
Virender Sehwag, Aakash Chopra, Gautam Gambhir

Middle-order bats:
Dinesh Mongia, Suresh Raina, Mohammed Kaif, S. Badrinath, Venugopala Rao, Rohit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Cheteshwar Pujara, Robin Uthappa

Wicket Keepers:
Parthiv Patel, Puneet Bisht

Pace-bowlers:
Munaf Patel, Ajit Agarkar, V Yo Mahesh, Rakesh Patel, Ashish Nehra, Irfan Pathan, Joginder Sharma, V. R. V. Singh

Spinners:
Harbhajan Singh, Rajesh Pawar, Piyush Chawla, Murali Kartik, K. P. Appanna

I may have missed some names. If I have, please add them to the Comments section and I will update this list a few days later…

Note that only some of these 27 players are under-25. But most of them are often mentioned in the context of being on the verge of consideration of national duties. I think that a subset of this set of players should constantly play either in some part of the world or in India against each other. That is the only way to (a) keep the seniors honest, (b) ensure that people like Irfan Pathan and Munaf Patel are match-fit, (c) ascertain true bench strength, (d) sharpen match skills of players in a slightly higher-intensity setting than the Ranji Trophy setting.

Dhoni not to play today?

Cricinfo in this article does not include Dhoni in India’s probable XI for the final ODI today against Soth Africa. Here are some reactions, speculative of course, about the probable team.

  • Dhoni is still unwell.
  • Indian team management thinks Gambhir would be better as SA might play the much faster Dale Steyn. Since Karthik has done well the last game, and we do need 5 bowlers, the guy to drop is Dhoni.
  • Do we need 5 bowlers? Can’t they just drop Ishanth Sharma and include Gambhir?
  • What about Uthappa?
  • Are Sreesanth & Agarkar still unwell or are they not being considered?
  • Does Cricinfo know what it is talking about? Or are they also speculating just like us?

Team India Selection: Lack of Balance and Coach…

Barring a few raised-eyebrows, the team selections for the ODIs and Tests in Ireland and England have been quite good.

Here are some of my “raised eyebrow” issues:

  • The worst goof up is, IMVHO, the absence of a coach for such an important tour. This is going to be a long and an arduous tour and the embark on it without a full-time, professional coach is nothing short of blasphemy. While we can understand and perhaps even accept that Messers Sharad Powar, Niranjan Shah, Ratnakar Shetty and Srinivasan — Board aficionados — can do nothing more than smelling money, it amazes me that cricketing folk like Sunil Gavaskar, S. Venkatraghavan and Ravi Shastri can hold their heads high after delivering one of the bleakest moments for Indian Cricket! The lack of accountability for the manner in which this search process was planned, conducted and executed is galling. Who will pay for this mess that these goons have landed Indian cricket in? Surely this bunch couldn’t organise a booze-party in a brewery even if their life depended on it!
  • This persistence with Gautam Gambhir is a bit puzzling. He is now in both teams, which makes it all the more frustrating. If the team wanted a cover for the Jaffer-Karthik combine for the Tests, perhaps Aakash Chopra would have been a better choice. He has a tight technique and has also worked the club circuit in England for the last few years!
  • The absence of Dinesh Mongia will, I think, hurt the team. He is a decent bat. He has played many a season in England on the county circuit. And he is a decent enough bowler to claim the 5th bowlers’ slot in a ODI team. His absence hurt the balance of Team India in the World Cup and I suspect that this will be the case in this series too. Unless India are able to unearth a decent allrounder, someone like Mongia (or even Pathan) should be in the team, in my view.
  • The presence of Ajit Agarkar in the ODI team! I really can’t fathom this. Perhaps the selection team decided that, with the unreliability of Munaf Patel, they needed someone more experienced in the attack. Agarkar continues to be an enigma. When Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag and Munaf Patel have been punished for their lackadaisical approach to the game, I am not sure why Agarkar was spared. While his physical intensity is not really in question, his mental approach to the game is certainly, in my view, lackadaisical.
  • The choice of vice-captains. Sachin Tendulkar is vice-captain in Tests and Dhoni is the vice-captain in ODIs. Figure that one out! Is there a hint that, keeping in mind the huge “why two wicketkeepers” outcries during the Bangladesh Test series, this bifurcation in vice-captain responsibilities means Dhoni will perhaps sit out in the Tests against England? It is certainly possible, although I am possibly reading too much into things… Second-guessing Team India selectors is always a hard task!
  • The presence of Laxman in the Test team. I have said enough on this topic in the past and so won’t repeat it. He is an over-rated cricketer with a poor work-ethic. He should make way for youngsters like Rohit Sharma, S. Badrinatha and Cheteshwar Pujara.

Having said that, let us look at the possible teams:

ODIs:
Gautam Gambhir
Robin Uthappa / Dinesh Karthik
Sourav Ganguly
Sachin Tendulkar
Rahul Dravid (capt)
Yuvraj Singh / Rohit Sharma
Mahendra Singh Dhoni (vice-capt, wk)
Ramesh Powar / Piyush Chawla
Ajit Agarkar
Zaheer Khan
Sreesanth / RP Singh

The first thing that strikes you about this team is its lack of balance. This is where a Dinesh Mongia (or a performing-Pathan) provide an edge. And that is another reason why the absence of Virender Sehwag creates a bigger hole. While one can certainly understand that Sehwag needs to be left out of the team, one can’t ignore the fact that Sehwag would routinely bowl 5-6 steady overs every game. Yuvraj Singh does not bowl much these days. And Sachin Tendulkar is no 10-overs-every-match type of bowler.

While Rohit Sharma does bowl off-spin, I don’t see him as able to dislodge the middle-grouping of Ganguly-Tendulkar-Dravid-Yuvraj. Morevoer, he has not really bowled in first-class games and has bowled only a few overs in List-A and Twenty20 games.

The fast-bowling department lacks discipline, balance, pace and depth. While one can understand why Munaf Patel wasn’t chosen, the left-field appearance of Ajit Agarkar is a throwback to the pre-World-Cup-2007 hoopla. The collective ODI experience of this group is shallow and will, I believe, expose them badly. Then again, they may do really well through a combination of hard work, disciplined line-and-length and fielding excellence.

The less said about the fielding, the better!

Tests:
Wasim Jaffer
Dinesh Karthik / Gautam Gambhir
Rahul Dravid (capt)
Sachin Tendulkar (vice-capt)
Sourav Ganguly
VVS Laxman / Yuvraj Singh
Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk) / Ramesh Powar
Anil Kumble
Zaheer Khan
Sreesanth
Ranadeb Bose / RP Singh / Ishant Sharma

The opening combination is a dreadful worry. Again, it is likely that Jaffer will pull his offside discipline together and it is likely that Karthik will be able to dig his heels in. But it is a worry that Team India is approaching its longer-term planning and development in this manner. I fear that Karthik is going to go down the path of people like Deep DropGupta, Party Patel and Sanjay Bangar before him! A makeshift can only be that… makeshift! Even Virender Sehwag, with a batting average of nearly 50, has been left behind. A makeshift he was too. I wonder how many more will be sacrificed before a longer-term view is taken of the opening position. It is a vital position — especially when touring England and Australia.

I hope the team does not play two ‘keepers. They can then either go with Powar or Yuvraj Singh at #7. I know (and have heard) the ‘spin’ around Karthik being chosen purely as a batsman. But if Karthik can ‘keep as well as Dhoni — and possibly even a tad better — why not choose another bowler?

The absence of any young batting talent in this team is also a concern. I’d have liked to have seen a Rohit Sharma or a Cheteshwar Pujara instead of VVS Laxman! But apart from a protest message from ‘gnbmdr’ this view isn’t going to do much — at least for the time being!

Finally again, the bowling… I have a feeling that one of Ranadeb Bose or Ishant Sharma (and not RP Singh) will get a guernsey in the bowling line-up. I like the look of Bose. And if there is an optimal place for his to make his debut, it would be in England. What he lacks in pace, he more than adequately makes up with away movement and line-and-length. Still, the bowling lacks depth and balance. The only safe way for this team to get 20 wickets consistently will be, IMVHO, if it goes in with a 5-man bowling attack. And for that to happen, Dhoni needs to bench-warm!

All in all, it is not a great selection effort. But it is not a bad hand either. It will have to do, given the bench-strength. The sacking of Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag and Irfan Pathan has to be commended. At the same time, the reinstating of Ajit Agarkar is more mysterious than his Mickey Mouse ears! I do, however, feel that the absence of a proper coach, the absence of Dinesh Mongia from the ODI team and the presence of VVS Laxman in the Test team will hurt India.

I am happy to be proven wrong on all these counts…

Teams Selected…

The teams for the ODIs and Tests in Ireland and England have been picked. The names that are absent are those of Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Munaf Patel.

Sehwag was showing signs of pulling it all together. So, this must be a huge setback for him. For a person who was the toast of the town and the team vice-captain until 6 months back, the slide has been dramatic.

Harbhajan Singh has been unable to see off the challenge from Romesh Powar.

Munaf Patel pays the price for a casual (and shocking) approach to fitness and fielding.

All three pay the price for a lackadaisical approach to their cricket. Given this is a core principle behind their axing, I am really not sure why Laxman is still in the Test team. Oh well…

The teams are:

ODIs:
Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid (capt), Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Karthik, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (vice-capt, wk), Rohit Sharma, Ramesh Powar, Ajit Agarkar, Piyush Chawla, Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, Sreesanth.

Tests:
Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid (capt), Sachin Tendulkar (vice-capt), Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), Ramesh Powar, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth, RP Singh, Ishant Sharma, Ranadeb Bose.

Team India Probables for England series

The selectors have chosen 29 players as “probables” for the England series. The team will be selected on June 12th after two “conditioning camps”; one for bowlers, in Mysore (June 4-8) and one for batsmen, in Bangalore (June 9-12). The selected team will then have a camp at the NCA in Bangalore on June 13-16.

The 14 Bowlers for the bowlers’ camp are:

Zaheer Khan, Rudra Pratap Singh, V R V Singh, Ishant Sharma, S Sreesanth, Ajit Agarkar, Irfan Pathan, Ranadeb Bose, Munaf Patel, Anil Kumble, Ramesh Powar, Rajesh Pawar, Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Oza.

Piyush Chawla and V Yo Mahesh will be at the Australian Cricket Academy from June 2 and so, have not been included.

The group of 16 bowlers (including the 2 who will be in Australia) perhaps represents the best bowlers in the land and seems to be fair. There are no real surprises there, I’d say — although one might say that Ajit Agrakar is always a surprise in any selection!

The 15 batsmen who have been chosen are:

Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Wasim Jaffer, V V S Laxman, Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Virender Sehwag, Dinesh Mongia, M S Dhoni, Dinesh Kartik, Rohit Sharma, Mohd Kaif, S Badrinath and Yuvraj Singh.

Again, there are no surprises there. It is certainly nice to see Mohammed Kaif back in there. Tiwary misses out. Although his operation was successfully completed in London, he will not have recovered in time to make the cut! Suresh Raina is on the outer. He will have to work hard next season to come back into the minds of the selectors.

Team India XII for the second Test

India has announced its XII for the second Test against Bangladesh.

India’s XII for the Test is:

Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Mahendra Dhoni, Anil Kumble, Rajesh Pawar, Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, Ishant Sharma, Ramesh Powar

No Yuvraj Singh. No VVS Laxman and no VRV Singh! Clearly, one of Inshant Sharma or Rajesh Pawar will get a game here (unless someone gets injured match-day)!

It is likely that Rajesh Pawar will sit this one out.
