The answer to your question, Mohan is a resounding yes.

I have to say though that the comparisons between "protectionism" and IPL's 4 overseas players/team is like comparing apples to oranges.

In any case, the capital of capitalism itself has always had restrictions on the number of overseas workers (like the cap on H1B visas).

But coming back to Cricket - the number of overseas players allowed in IPL is actually quite a lot (4) compared to say England, where only 2 are allowed to play for a county team (They overcome this by using the Kolpak ruling, but that is another story).

I read a column written a while back by Bobby Simpson when England failed to qualify for the Euro 2008 saying that the over reliance of overseas players in football was the root cause for this. I don't think this will happen to India with the four player limit - in fact, the exact opposite is bound to happen, with the local players learning from the likes of Warne, Peiterson, Vettori, et al.

I agree that the IPL has been great for cricket. I also think Indian cricket has improved because of IPL. Players are becoming more adventurous also. So there must be foreign participation. Also there must be a cap of 4 foreign players. Both are good and Indian cricket will benefit from both.

Good points but a waste of time for such an in depth analysis. My guess is that this friend of yours was just needling you. Anyone that does not get the point of the IPL has lost his marbles and lost the plot. It is great for cricket. It is great for Indian cricket. Full stop.
